The Theological Dictionary of the New Testament is a fundamental work for the exegesis of the New Testament. It is considered an exegetical work of the century, which took more than 45 years to complete. Founded by Gerhard Kittel, this dictionary makes a monumental attempt to exhaustively analyze the use and meaning of all religiously or theologically significant vocabulary in the New Testament.

The Theological Dictionary has largely fulfilled this requirement. Several of the more than 2,300 articles are important research contributions. The entries typically deal with the secular background of a term, its use in the Old Testament and in extra-biblical Jewish literature, as well as its use in the New Testament. There are also comprehensive bibliographies and footnotes.
